Tongue-in-Cheek Horse Racing Program published onboard the RMS Edinburgh Castle of the Union-Castle Line, held on Friday, 24 June 1955. Each of the six races was given a "theme," and the five [wooden] horses would be listed by owner, name of the horse, jockey, and quip.

RULES

  1. The winner of each race shall be eligible for the “Edinburgh Derby.”
  2. The course consists of a length of cape which the horse must traverse, by cutting from end to end with scissors provided for the purpose. Ripping is not allowed.
  3. The tape must be held in front of the cutting scissors by the first two fingers of the non-cutting hand until past the post.
  4. Every horse shall keep a straight course down the middle of the tape. and. if it runs off the course, i.e. cuts through the edge of the tape, it will be disqualified.
  5. Horses must parade and race in the registered colors of their owners, but eyebrows, lips. hair, cheeks, toenails and fingernails must not be colored to match.
  6. All mares are requested to leave their foals in the stable.

Any Rule not mentioned above will be strictly enforced.

The Public are warned to beware of Pickpockets, Cardsharps, Gangsters and Tipsters, also the Secretary and the Treasurer.
