Postcards of the Anchor Line Steamship Company
The GG Archives has a small collection of the Anchor Line postcards, Established in 1855 in Glassgow, Scotland, and dissolved in 1980. Our series of postally used and unused postcards date from the early 1900s.
RMS Caledonia
Postcard Originally Attached to a Second Class Dinner Menu dated 9 June 1910 for the Anchor Line Twin-Screw Steamship "Caledonia." The Bottom image is of Dunstaffnage Castle, located in western Scotland near Oban. Reverse Side is Blank. During World War I, the passenger ship Caledonia was torpedoed and sunk in the Mediterranean Sea, 125 nautical miles east by south of Malta by SM U-65 (Imperial German Navy) with the loss of a crew member. Her captain was taken as a prisoner of war. GGA Image ID # 149bf7742c
RMS California
Anchor Line Twin-Screw Steamship "California," Postally Used Postcard on 26 April 1914. Published by McDorquodale & Co., Ltd. Built by D & W Henderson Ltd, Glasgow for the Anchor Line Ltd in 1907 for the Glasgow to New York transatlantic route. The ship and was sunk by the German submarine SM U-85 on 7 February 1917. Colorized Postcard of the TSS "California" of the Anchor Line. The Original Owner, Patricia J. Moll, Inscribed "Our Ship Going Home August 20, 1930," on the Back of the Postally Unsed Postcard. SS California was a British 16,792 GRT steam turbine ocean liner that was built in Glasgow in 1923 for Henderson Brothers (Anchor Line). The California carried passengers between Glasgow and New York via Londonderry (Derry) and Boston. The ship was destroyed in the North Atlantic by a Luftwaffe air attack in 1943. RMS Furnessia
Postcard from the Anchor Line SS Furnessia Dated 20 July 1901 with an Inscribed Poem from Tennyson Entitled Crossing the Bar. Reverse Side is Blank. The Furnessia was built in 1880 of 5,495 Gross Tonnage. Her Final Voyage Departed on 17 February 1911. GGA Image ID # 149c40be98
