From the Publisher

Graceful, fast, and luxuriously outfitted, the Andrea Doria was one of the most famous ships of the 20th century. On July 26, 1956, three years after its inaugural voyage, the famous Italian liner was assured of an immortal place in maritime history after colliding with another vessel off the New England coast and sinking.

Maritime expert William Miller pays tribute to that magnificent ship in this authoritative, profusely illustrated archive. Scores of rare photographs provide views of lounges and staterooms, shots of the ship in port, and depictions of its glorious twin, the Christoforo Colombo, and other fleet mates.

Today, the wreckage of the Andrea Doria rests on the bottom of the western Atlantic—disintegrating, entangled in masses of lost fishing nets, and littered with debris. The ex-Stockholm sails on, but now as the Portuguese-owned Athena. Interest in those ships and their collision remains high. It is my hope that, with this book, we have another chance to examine the glorious Andrea Doria.

From the Back Cover

Graceful, fast, and luxuriously outfitted, the Andrea Doria was one of the most famous ships of the twentieth century. Embodying the Italian tradition of sophisticated style and luxury at sea, the ship was also a floating art gallery, displaying an extraordinary array of original artwork.

On July 26, 1956, three years after its inaugural voyage, the famous Italian liner was assured of an immortal place in maritime history after colliding with the Stockholm off of the New England coast and sinking.

Nearly two hundred rare photographs provide views of spacious lounges, elegant staterooms, the ship in port, and depictions of its glorious twin, the Cristoforo Colombo, as well as the Roma, Rex, Conte de Savoia, and many other fleet mates.
