Synopsis
This work is a beneficial aid in the use of the indexes of immigrant passenger lists in the National Archives, for they are arranged in the chronological order of the ships' arrival dates and there under by the names of the vessels or the passenger lines, and only then by passengers' surnames.
This directory provides a ready means of ascertaining information that will be helpful, for it is arranged by year and steamship company, and there under by port of entry, the vessel name, its arrival date and port of embarkation.
Note from Gjenvick-Gjønvik Archives
From our collection of Passenger Lists, we discovered an unexpectedly high incidence of westbound transatlantic steamship voyages to US Ports not being recorded in this directory. If your relative arrived at a given port and date but is not listed in the directory, check the ports' microfilm records to verify the arrival date.
Morton Allan stated, "To ensure practical accuracy and completeness, this volume has been compiled with all reasonable care and industry, forming a comprehensive and valuable directory."
While many might consider this book one of the Great Genealogical endeavors, the GG Archives feels that Morton Allan could have made the book a lot more useful. The author had accumulated significant information about each voyage, the Ship's departure date, other ports of call, and perhaps the Ship's commander.
Unfortunately, the author focused only on a few facts for each voyage: the Ship's name, steamship line, date of arrival, and the origination and destination ports. The author inadvertently limited the book's usefulness by narrowing the information provided. By today's standards, it could be more comprehensive and of greater value as a research tool.
We believe that if someone would publish a directory that not only broadened the timeline to, say, 1880 to 1949, releasing each decade as a volume by itself and including all the pertinent facts of the voyage, the author might genuinely have something useful for the genealogical researchers and family historians.
Copyright does not protect facts, ideas, systems, or methods of operation. However, it may protect the way these things are expressed.
With today's computing power and database options like Microsoft Access, one's ability to create a book with pertinent facts gathered from many sources and formatting those facts to maximize its usefulness to its intended audience should make creating this book(s) worthwhile.
