Conte Grande (1927) (a) Lloyd Sabaudo Line, (b) Italia Line

Built by Stabilimento Técnico, Trieste, Italy. Tonnage: 25,661. Dimensions: 624' x 78' (652' o.l.). Twin-screw, 21 knots. Steam turbines. Two masts and two funnels. Launched, June 29, 1927. Maiden voyage: Genoa-Naples-New York, April 13, 1928. Transferred to South American service in 1932. WWII Service: Seized by Brazil in 1941. Later became an American troopship during World War II. Post War Service: Returned to South American service of Italia Line in 1949, after being reconditioned. Renamed: (a) Monticello (1941), (b) Conte Grande (1947). Withdrawn from Italia Line service in 1960. Placed in Lloyd Triestino service, December 1960. Fate: She was scrapped in 1961. Sister ship: Conte Biancamano.

Lloyd Sabaudo Annual Report - 1927

In 1927, foreign competition in shipbuilding was a serious matter. Still, despite it, some were getting a very satisfactory amount of work for owners in other countries.

It was remarkable that so much of the shipyard work formerly carried out in England was now done abroad. Lloyd Sabaudo Co. Ocean liner owns the Conte Rosso, Conte Verde, Conte Biancamano, and Conte Grande

While circumstances of the competition were ruled out, it will be all the more interesting to see how the Conte Grande compares with the previous "Contes" in speed, economy, and general designs and equipment.

Internally, and so far as the furnishing and decoration of the passenger quarters are concerned, comparisons will be less attractive because this section of the work was mainly done in Italy.

Conte Grande weighs 25,000 tons gross and 25,000 b.h.p. is expected to be launched soon and will sail on her maiden voyage to New York in February 1928.

The three "Contes" already in service are proving highly successful. As of 1926, they made 19 voyages on the North Atlantic route, carrying 45,534 passengers. In the South American trade, they made seven trips with 32,747 passengers, against 22,431 in the previous year.

Lloyd Sabaudo's "Conte Grande" - 1927

Concerning previous mv reports concerning the launch of the TSS Conte Grande from the Stabilimcnto Técnico Triestino for the Lloyd Sabaudo, it is interesting to note that Lloyd Sabaudo launched the vessel about eight months after the keel was laid down and that the owners have already announced the date of the maiden trip for 14th February 1928, so that it has to be assumed that the vessel will be completed in about seven months, while the other liners which are expected to sail on their maiden trips this year have been completed in not less than 14 months.

Recently when the Cap Arcona was launched, the fact that the Company announced the date of the maiden trip on the day of the launch was a sign of the efficiency of Herman shipping. Still, this policy is not a monopoly of Germans and is now started in Italy by Lloyd Sabaudo. The launch of the Conte Grande has again attracted the public's attention to this young and very flourishing Company.

Ship Reconstruction and Launching of the Ss Conte Grande - 1949

Reconstruction of the 24,000-ton SS Conte Grande, owned by the Societa Italia, was completed during the latter part of August by the Officine Allestlmento Riparazlone Návl Shipyard. Completion of the sister ship, the S. S. Conte Biancamano, Is scheduled for early November by the Monfalcone Shipyard In Trieste.
