GLIMPSES OF AMERICA'S THRESHOLD
Hundreds of thousands—men, women and children—pass over, or are detained at, the Doorstep of America every year.
In this pamphlet are illustrated the various precautions which the Government takes to insure desirable material for future citizenship.
We believe that this presentation of these details will prove not only interesting but novel to the busy practitioner, especially if he is located in the interior, and we dedicate it to him with our compliments and a thorough appreciation of the confidence which he has shown in our products.

PREVENTIVE MEDICINE
In a line with the general subject illustrated in these pages, The Maltine Company offered in January, 1902, two prizes (one thousand dollars and five hundred dollars) for the best essays on Preventive Medicine.
In order that there might be no violation of medical ethics, and no suspicion of mere commercialism, it was stipulated that Maltine or any of its combinations must not be mentioned or even indirectly alluded to in the essays.
The prizes were awarded on October 18th by the judges, Dr. Daniel Lewis, of New York, Dr. C. A. L. Reed of Cincinnati and Dr. John Edwin Rhodes of Chicago, and it is safe to say that the successful essays represent the best thought and highest scientific achievement of the present day on Preventive Medicine.
These essays are now being published in a handsome pamphlet, and will be at the service of all physicians free of charge. Address The Maltine Company, 8th Avenue, 18th and 19th Streets, Borough of Brooklyn, N. Y.

NEOFERRUM—THE NEW IRON
After a period of investigation and experimentation covering more than three years, with a view to the production of a salt of iron superior if possible in its oxygen-carrying function and assimibility to any before the medical profession, we have succeeded in evolving a Malto-Peptonate of Iron, which marks a distinct advance in chemistry and therapeutics.
This new iron is neutral, organic, assimilable and non-constipating. Neoferrum is a liquid preparation, containing besides the Malto-Peptonate of Iron, Manganese, a minute amount of absolutely pure Arsenious Acid, and 25% of Maltine, which is attenuated with the finest sherry wine obtainable.
It thus possesses the following great advantages over other iron preparations:
First—The Malto-Peptonate of Iron is the most modern iron salt. It marks a long step in advance in chemistry and therapeutics. It may almost be said to inaugurate a new era in irons.
Second—Neoferrum, by virtue of the Maltine which it contains, has digestive (starch-converting) power, which no other iron preparation has.
Third—Neoferrum has nutritive value which no other iron preparation has.
Fourth—Neoferrum contains a minute amount of absolutely pure Arsenious Acid, thus rendering it of greater value in Chlorosis, Anaemia and allied types of blood impoverishment than other iron preparations.
A pamphlet embracing a series of clinical cases treated with Neoferrum at the West Side Dispensary, New York, will be sent to physicians on application.

MALTINE WITH CASCARA SAGRADA
Cascara Sagrada imparts tone to the muscular tissues of the bowels when they are in an atonic condition, whereby the peristaltic action is re-established and in most cases permanently maintained.
On page 1287 of the U. S. Dispensatory it is said, "Cascara Sagrada is an excellent laxative for use in habitual constipation, . ... its continued use seems to procure a permanent influence on the intestinal tract, so that the glandular and peristaltic actions become of themselves sufficiently active."
When it is combined with "Maltine, "no griping, no nausea, nor any distressing reaction result, and the objectionable bitterness of the bark, so indifferently masked by other mediums, is overcome."
Maltine with Cascara Sagrada" never varies in strength. Its exceptional reliability is due to the fact that the fresh bark is selected with the greatest care and kept until thoroughly seasoned, while the extracts made from it are always tested for uniformity.
It is a reliable vegetable aperient and cholagogue, of great value in the treatment of hemorrhoids, producing, with rare exceptions, painless and satisfactory evacuations, greatly improving the digestion, and by its nutritive and tonic properties conducing to a better condition of the whole system.
It is especially indicated in constipation of pregnancy, and is an ideal laxative for children.

MALTINE WITH COD LIVER OIL
A Combination of Maltine and 30% of the PUREST Norwegian Cod Liver Oil. It is conceded that in Pulmonary Affections, Wasting Diseases, Strumous and Tubercular Diathesis, no remedy is esteemed as highly as cod liver oil.
In this preparation the oil is rendered easy of administration and assimilation, and its efficiency is reinforced by the reconstructive and digestive properties of "Maltine."
The combination of the oil with "Maltine" is effected by an ingenious vacuum process original with the Maltine Company, which admirably disguises the disagreeable odor and taste of the oil, prevents rancidity and assures stability.
Dr. Gull, of London, states that "the disagreeable taste of cod liver oil may be disguised by combining the oil with extract of malt in vacuo. This solution shows no fat globules, but only extracts of malt which are rich in diastase, will permit such thorough incorporation."
"Maltine with Cod Liver Oil" does not disturb digestion nor offend the palate, contains no inert matter whatever, and its base is a powerful reconstructive of conceded value; therefore, its superiority over "emulsions" which employ mediums of no therapeutic value to hold the oil in suspension and disguise its taste, is too obvious to require further comment.

In 1902, The Maltine Company issued an album of photographs, called Quarantine Setches. It contains between thirty and forty engravings showing the care of immigrants at the New York quarantine station on Ellis Island, in all its phases from the arrival on shipboard to the departure by rail for the far west. It is altogether one of the most instructive booklets that has been published by the Maltine Company; and this is according it great praise, for the company is noted for the dissemination of useful material.
