Norway's Olympic Valley

With the announcement that Lillehammer will play host to the Winter Olympic Games in 1994, this charming little town and the valley of Gudbrandsdalen have suddenly been put on the map. Providing a colourful and informative presentation of the town and valley, this book takes you from Lake Mjøsa to the Mountains of Dovrefjell, through wild and beautiful landscapes where old trades and modern industries exist side by side in communities that have retained their rich traditions in painting, folk music and poetry. You will meet a lot of interesting people and hear some quite extraordinary stories about one of the more exciting and inspiring parts of Norway.

A book about Norway's Olympic valley can only present some of the many verses of the national anthem to which Nobel prize winner for literature, Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson, alluded almost a hundred years ago. The intention has been to give just a sample of the features of the 220-kilometre cleft in the mountains of eastern Norway.

The valley's 80,000 inhabitants stand ready to attend to their duties as hosts before, during and after the 12th Winter Olympic Games in 1994. They are keen to show visitors around a town and a valley that really are luxuriant, wide, tranquil, beautiful, enjoyable, dynamic and full of traditions and culture.

Presented here were a few of favourite verses in the song about Lillehammer and Gud-brandsdalen, an evergreen in colours, words and contours. We hope that everyone who comes here will recognise the particular stanzas that we have presented — and discover some favourite verses of their own. For it all lies here in perfection, waiting to surprise the minds and senses of all who come to visit.

Now we must bid you welcome to the final verse. As so many of the other pieces in the mosaic called Lillehammer and Gudbrands-dalen, this too is exciting, dramatic and lyrical. Enjoy your trip - and come back soon!
