La Touraine (1891) French Line

Built by Chantiers de Penhoet, St. Nazaire, France. Tonnage: 9,047. Dimensions: 520' x 56' (536' o.l.). Twin-screw, 19 knots. Triple expansion engines. Three masts and two funnels. Launched: March 21,1890. Maiden voyage: Havre- New York, June 20, 1891. At later date one mast was removed. Speed Record: Made a fast crossing from Havre to New York in 6 days, 18 hours. Made her final voyage to New York in 1922. Fate: Scrapped in France, 1924.

This telegram has been typed out in the style of a letter without any of the traditional markings of a telegram. It is a copy of the farewell telegram sent to the members of the ARMCO Ambulance Corps, in care of Captain Newman Ebersole, aboard the French Line Steamship "Tourraine" [SS La Touraine], just before sailing from New York on August 7, 1917.

The GG Archives is the work and passion of two people, Paul Gjenvick, a professional archivist, and Evelyne Gjenvick, a curator. Paul earned a Masters of Archival Studies - a terminal degree from Clayton State University in Georgia, where he studied under renowned archivist Richard Pearce-Moses. Our research into the RMS Laconia and SS Bergensfjord, the ships that brought two members of the Gjønvik family from Norway to the United States in the early 20th century, has helped us design our site for other genealogists. The extent of original materials at the GG Archives can be very beneficial when researching your family's migration from Europe.
