The Navy Surface Nuclear Power Program offers many attractive opportunities for the Bluejacket who wants to broaden his scientific and technical background and obtain a sound knowledge of the principles of nuclear physics and reactor engineering.

The U.S. Navy has developed a safe, reliable, and immensely successful application of nuclear power to the propulsion of ships. This new field of engineering has provided the means of steaming farther, faster, and longer than ever before.

The success of nuclear power is due to more than meticulous technical development. It is due equally to the officers and men who operate and maintain the nuclear propulsion plants. Their careful selection and intensive training are the basic essentials of this success.

ONE OF THE BEST EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES AVAILABLE

Recently a 3-ship Task Force of the United States Navy steamed around the world without refueling or provisioning. They were completely self-sustained. They could do this because they were nuclear powered . . . able to remain at sea for months at a time.

In order for this feat to become possible, somebody has to man the nuclear power plants, and maintain and repair the sophisticated equipment aboard today's nuclear powered ships. This "somebody" are the men of the United States Navy—intelligent, alert young men who are carefully selected and given intensive training in the basic essentials of nuclear power.

You could become part of this vital team so necessary to the preservation of freedom throughout the world. The Surface Nuclear Power Program provides a unique and almost unlimited opportunity for you to study and work in the field of nuclear propulsion. You can increase your scientific and technical knowledge, and at the same time relate sound theoretical and practical application to the principles of nuclear physics and reactor engineering.

In fact, you will discover that the Surface Nuclear Power Program offers one of the best educations available anywhere. The program offers a full year of nuclear power training leading to duty aboard nuclear powered aircraft carriers, cruisers, or destroyer leaders.

The United States Aircraft Carrier USS Enterprise (CVN-65)

It consists of 24 weeks at Basic Nuclear Power School, and 26 weeks of operator training at a Nuclear Power Training Unit. In close replicas of actual shipboard machinery spaces, you'll learn to operate under conditions as close to actual practice as possible. When your training is completed, you'll be a competent operator with considerable experience.

If you can pass the mental and physical requirements, and if you are sincerely interested in learning the fundamentals of nuclear power, the Navy has a wonderful opportunity awaiting you. WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO APPLY FOR THE SURFACE NUCLEAR POWER PROGRAM?

YOU ARE IF . . .

1. In MM, ET, EM, or IC rating, or in a Class "A" school leading to one of the above ratings.
2. Your General Classification Tests plus Arithmetic test scores total 115.
3. Not more than 25 years of age on class convening date at Nuclear Power School.
4. A U.S. citizen.
5. A high school graduate, or have 2 years high school with a high school General Educational Development equivalent.
6. Have not had more than 4 years total active military service on class convening date at Nuclear Power School.
7. A clear record.
8. Physically qualified for Nuclear Power Program. ( Normal color perception is required ).
9. Stand in the upper two-thirds of Class "A" school or other service schools attended.

WHAT IS OFFERED?

. . . One of the best in service educations available to you as a Bluejacket. The Navy Nuclear Power Program offers a full year of nuclear power training. It offers unique and challenging opportunities for young Bluejackets to work in the field of nuclear propulsion.

TRAINING PROGRAM NUCLEAR TRAINING IS DIVIDED INTO TWO PHASES

PHASE ONE

The first phase provides a 24-week course of instruction at Bainbridge, Md., or Mare Island, Calif.

The purpose of the course is to give the student the theoretical background needed for PHASE TWO, the prototype or operational training phase which follows. Subjects studied include:

• MATHEMATICS BASIC PHYSICS REACTOR PRINCIPLES
• THERMODYNAMICS
• REACTOR PLANT TECHNOLOGY
• ELECTRICAL THEORY
• RADIOLOGICAL CONTROL
• ENGINEERING MATERIALS

PHASE TWO TRAINING PROGRAM

Successful completion of PHASE ONE leads to operational training at a prototype site. This training provides nuclear power school graduates with an opportunity to learn how to operate the shipboard nuclear power propulsion plants. In close replicas of actual shipboard machinery spaces, the trainee learns to operate equipment under conditions as close to actual practice as possible. Training covers the detailed study of all systems and components and their interrelationships.

Students are trained to stand the watches of their ratings first. Then they are rotated to all other watch stations.

This phase of training is of 26 weeks duration at either Schenectady, N. Y., or Idaho Falls, Idaho.

When training is completed, the student is a competent operator with considerable experience.

EXTRA PAY

After completion of training and upon reporting to a nuclear power operator billet you will, if a career designated E-4 or above, be eligible to commence drawing an additional $75.00 a month over your base pay. The rates of proficiency pay are subject to change.

HOW DO YOU APPLY?

If you are in "A" School contact your Instructor, Motivator or Administrative Officer. Explain what you want. Arrangement will be made to give you a Nuclear Power Physical Examination. Your record will be reviewed. If it is determined that you are eligible to apply for the Nuclear Power Program, your name will be submitted to the Chief of Naval Personnel for final determination.

If you are in the Fleet submit a request for Nuclear Power Training. Talk to your Division Officer, Personnel Officer or Executive Officer. If you are eligible to apply for Nuclear Power Training, your Commanding Officer will forward your request to the Bureau of Naval Personnel for final determination.

The future of the technically trained man is most promising. The Navy urgently needs men to be technicians just as we need men to be leaders. In combining the two, we produce in ships like the ENTERPRISE, LONG BEACH, and BAINBRIDGE, system supervisors who are, in effect, "Practical Engineers."
