Spree (1890) North German Lloyd

Built by "Vulkan", Stettin, Germany. Tonnage: 6,963. Dimensions: 463' x 51'. Single-screw, 19 knots. Compound engines. 12,500 I.H.P. Three masts and two funnels. Note: Very attractive liner. Not quite fast enough to have won the trans-Atlantic speed record. Maiden voyage: Bremen- Southampton-New York, November 6, 1890. Modifications: Rebuilt and lengthened to 528 feet (7,840 tons) 1898-99. Altered to twin-screw; new engines installed. Renamed: (a) Kaiserin Maria Theresa (1899), (b) Ural (1904) Russian. Fate: Sunk at the Battle of Tsushima in Sea of Japan, May 27, 1905. Sister ship: Havel. Notable Event: The Cunard Liner SS Abyssinia (1870) was destroyed by fire in mid-Atlantic in December 1891, with all lives saved by the German Liner SS Spree.
