Reliance (1920) Hamburg-American Line

Built by J. C. Tecklenborg, Weser-munde, Germany. Tonnage: 19,802. Dimensions: 592' x 72' (618' o.l.). Triple screw, 17 knots. Triple expansion engines and one steam turbine. Two masts and three funnels. War Reparations: Keel was laid in 1914 for the Hamburg-American Line, but construction was held up during World War I. She was to have been named Johann Heinrich Burchard. However, when completed in 1920, she was turned over to the Dutch and renamed Limburgia. Did not continue for long in the Royal Holland Lloyd fleet, as she soon afterwards was transferred to United States. Renamed: Reliance (1922) United American Lines. Service: In 1926 the Hamburg-American Line became the owners, and as the Reliance continued in Hamburg-New York service. Passengers: 290 first, 320 second, 400 third. Besides being employed in regular trans-Atlantic service, she was used as a cruise ship. Fate: Gutted by fire at Hamburg in August 1938. The burned out hulk was sold to German shipbreakers in April 1940. Previously Named: Ex-Limburgia (1922), ex-Johann Heinrich Burchard (1920). Sister ship: Resolute.

Very rare prepaid certificate for second class passage on the RMS Reliance of RMSP. The passage for the 18 year old German immigrant girl was paid for by a relative, Bernhard Mayer, who immigrated in 1892.
