Specialty officers in the U.S. Navy serve in roles that require advanced education, certifications, or civilian experience. Unlike unrestricted line officers, many are commissioned above the Ensign rank and enter the service with direct access to mid-level officer grades based on their qualifications.

Commissioning Rank: Typically O‑2 (LTJG) or O‑3 (LT)

Requirements:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree
  • Passed a bar exam and licensed in a U.S. jurisdiction

Primary Duties:
