Introduction
Volume 1 of Tracing Your Ancestors in Minnesota includes a general introduction to genealogical research, as well as information about Minnesota state-wide records, and a general introduction to Minnesota county records.
This volume is a supplement to Volume 1 for the counties of southwest Minnesota. Very little of the information presented in Volume 1 is repeated in this volume. We suggest that you become well acquainted with the contents of volume 1, in addition to the county sections you are interested in.
It was surprising to find so little written about some of the counties in this volume. We hope that more people will begin preserving the history that is rapidly disappearing. Many communities have no published account of their history.
Despite all of our care, we expect that there will be some errors in this book. We hope that readers who find errors or emissions will report them. In particular, watch out for call numbers which have been changed.
Be Sure to Read the Section Entitled: General Information About Counties.
The counties of Minnesota are similar in many respects. Information about county records that apply to all counties is not repeated in the individual county sections.
Volume 1 was compiled and written by two individuals. It took seven years to complete.
Since we did not want to take seven years for each additional volume, we asked for help. About 15 people have aided in the production of this volume. This book itself has required an enormous amount of time and effort. We much appreciate the aid of all those who have so generously given of their time and energy to gather information. Without their help, this volume would have taken much longer to prepare.
In addition to those who are listed be lew, we express our appreciation to Ruby Shields and Ruth Bauer of the Minnesota Historical Society, Division of Archives and Manuscripts, for calling many of the Society's resources to our attention, and to Avis Gohl and Lorraine Rouzer who helped with the preliminary typing.
A special thanks go to my wife, Juanita Pope, who has been so patient with the amount of time I have spent on the book.
