The firm of Shaw and Savill was established in 1859. The company consolidated with the Albion Line in 1882. Their steamship service became firmly entrenched when they entered the new beautiful sister ships Arawa and Tainui on the England-Australia route in 1881. The company became closely associated with the White Star Line in the same year. In 1933, the Australian business of the White Star Line was acquired. It was during this time that the fleet of the Aberdeen Line was purchased.
