The CAL 39: A Nice Place to Call Home (1979)
After the race, it's a nice place to come home to.
Home.
That's really what the CAL 39 is all about below decks.
There's rich, warm teak—practically everywhere you look. A teak and holly cabin sole. 6'6" headroom.
Dining space for at least six adults. Sleeping accommodations for up to eight.
Plus a few touches of real luxury— like a built-in liquor locker with genuine leaded glass doors.
All in all, a comfortable place to rest the body. And a soothing place to rest the eye.
Like any other home, you select the floorplan.
Most cruising boats give you the choice of cabin colors. The CAL 39 gives you a choice of cabins.
The standard twin-cabin layout is ideal for a family or perhaps two couples. The forward cabin has a huge V-berth plus its own chest of drawers and a hanging locker. The main salon offers sleeping accommodations for up to five, including two double berths.
The optional tri-cabin design provides even more privacy, if that's required.
First, by creating the usual forward and main salon cabins. Then, by creating a separate owner's stateroom aft—complete with its own double berth, dressing area and private enclosed head.
Whichever plan you choose, you'll find Barient winches aboard. Pedestal steering. Pulpits and lifelines. Specially coated spars. A powerful Perkins diesel. Not to mention a navigator's station and a complete sea-going galley featuring gimbaled stove with oven, twin sinks and a big 7 cu. ft. icebox.
Home is where the heart is.
And Bill Lapworth's heart is in designing boats for pure performance— not rating points.
That's why, unlike so many other self-described cruiser / racers, the CAL 39 doesn't sacrifice comfort, space or style for the sake of a hot handicap.
Instead, the incredible result is a boat that's uncompromisingly comfortable -- and even faster than a CAL 40.
