Sophocles (1883) Aberdeen Line (G. Thompson & Co.)

Built by Harland & Wolff, Ltd., Belfast, Ireland. Tonnage: 4,673. Dimensions: 439' x 44'. Single-screw, 14 knots. Quadruple expansion engines. Four masts and one funnel. Steel hull. Originally had compound engines. Purchased as a replacement for the Thermopylae, which had been wrecked in September 1899. Service: Great Britain-Australia, via Capetown. Fate: Scrapped in 1908. Ex-Ionic (1883-1900).

Sophocles (1922) Aberdeen Line (British)

Built by Harland & Wolff, Ltd., Belfast, Ireland. Tonnage: 12,360. Dimensions: 500' x 63'. Twin-screw, 15 knots. Four steam turbines. Two masts and one funnel. Service: England-Australia, via Capetown. Ownership Transfer: Vessel transferred to Shaw, Savill & Albion Line in 1926. Renamed: Tamaroa (1926). Sister ship: Diogenes.
