The P. & O. Line was founded in 1837. P&O first introduced passenger services in 1844, with a leisure cruise departing from Southampton to the Mediterranean. Regular service to Australia was inaugurated by the Chusan in 1852. However, the trade to India was opened in 1842 by the Hindostán.
