New York (Ellis Island) Passenger Lists 1930-1939

Passenger Lists from 1930-1939 available from the GG Archives for voyages calling on the Port of New York (Ellis Island). The 1930s was a difficult time for the steamship lines with the worldwide depression and the start of World War II when Germany invaded Poland, causing Britain and France to declare war on Germany on 1 September 1939.

The transatlantic steamship lines stopped or severely decreased passenger voyages after War was declared on Germany for fear of having their steamships torpedoed and sunk by the everpresent German U-Boats. The US remained neutral until after Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941.
