The Author:

Melvin Maddocks has always maintained a New Englander’s interest in ships and the sea. His father was a ship chandler on Boston’s Commercial Wharf during the days of transition from sail to steam, and Maddocks himself served on board Navy LSTs during World War II. Harvard-educated, he is a columnist and critic for The Christian Science Monitor, as well as a frequent contributor to Time and other magazines.

The Consultants:

John Horace Parry, Gardiner Professor of Oceanic History and Affairs at Harvard University, received his Ph.D. from Cambridge University. He served on destroyers and aircraft carriers in World War II, rising to the rank of commander in the Royal Navy. He is the author of 10 books, including Trade and Dominion, The Spanish Sea- borneEmpire and The Discovery of the Sea.

Frank O. Braynard, a lifelong specialist in maritime affairs, is best known as founder and general manager of the Op Sail ’76 review of tall ships in New York Harbor during the 1976 Bicentennial Year. He has published 13 books and innumerable articles on such subjects as the early steamship Savannah and New York Harbor tugs, and is completing a monumental five-volume history of the great liner Leviathan.

William Avery Baker, a naval architect and engineer, spent 30 years with the Shipbuilding Division of Bethlehem Steel Corporation, designing vessels of all sizes up to supertankers. He is currently curator of the Hart Nautical Museum at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he took his degree. He is also author of The Engine- Powered Vessel, a history of ships from the first paddle-wheeler to the first commercial nuclear ship, the Savannah.
